If imessage doesn’t show read after sending a message and it shows delivered, it could be the recipient have not opened the message or probably turned off read receipts on it’s imessage.
It’s not all imessage users that do enable read receipts, there are quite number of persons that hate the read receipts feature on imessage and other instant messaging apps.
For me, as long as a sent message shows delivered I don’t bother to check if the recipient has opened and read the message cause I know the recipient has received the sent message on it’s mobile phone and that’s why it showed delivered.
