The major reason to switch between text message and imessage is when sending a message to a non iphone user like android or feature phone.

You cannot send an iMessage to an android phone user and a feature phone user. To send a message to an android phone user or feature phone user, you must enable send as sms on your iPhone and iPad.

The second reason to switch between text message and imessage is when there’s no internet connection on iphone and iPad.

Imessage works with internet connection so if there’s no internet connection on your iPhone or iPad, you must use the sms feature to send a message. Even if you’re having a poor internet connection, you may find it hard time using the imessage to send a message on your iPhone and iPad.

Imessage vs SMS which is better?

There’s no doubt that iMessage is way better as it is very economical compared to sms text message though you cannot send an iMessage to a non apple user like the android phone.

With imessage, you can send files, documents, audio files, videos and pictures in high quality, know when someone is typing to you, know when someone has read your sent message, etc

On green sms text message on iPhone, there’s no delivery report, read receipt and you can’t send large files like videos, pictures, documents, etc.

As long as you are sending a text message to someone not using an Android phone or any of these feature classic phone, I don’t see the reason why you shouldn’t use iMessage to send a text to someone using iMessage and iPhone.

It is quite annoying that iPhone green text message doesn’t have a delivery report which makes it difficult to know if a recipient received the text message.

Also there is no read receipt which is pretty much available on iMessage.

iMessage is the best over sms as it is economical and has texting features compared to sms text message.
