There’s no doubt that water damages the mobile phone, but this may be quite different with sim cards. So this is what this post is all about, explaining if indeed sim card can be damaged by water.

The answer is yes. Sim cards are waterproof and cannot be damaged by water even if the sim card falls into a five liter of water though it depends on the sim manufacturer.
Sim cards are waterproof and you don’t need to bother yourself thinking if your sim card can be damaged by the water. If your mobile phone falls into the water, your phone might get damaged but nothing will happen to your sim card.

1. Using a hard object on the sim chip

It is advisable not to try to use a hard or sharp object on the sim chip cause there’s a likelihood that it will damage the sim card.
2. Heat can damage a sim card
Aside from the fact that sim cards are waterproof, heat can damage a sim card. This is quite rare to see but it does happen and I have seen an occasion where a sim card was damaged because of heat from the phone.
Heat from the phone can cone from different ways, even over charging your phone while mobile data or the Wi-Fi is on can cause the phone to get heated up.
3. Faulty sim slot
I’ve seen this very often in forums and social media, people that got their sim card damaged while trying to pull out their sim card from the sim slot.
This is why I’m not a fan of excessive switching of sim cards from one phone to another cause the sim card chip might get damaged in the process removing the sim card from the sim slot.
While trying to remove your sim card from the sim slot, always be careful else you might end up damaging your sim card in the process.

Do sim cards get damaged by water?
SIM cards cannot be damaged by water even if a sim card falls into a deep water as they are waterproof.
In some rare cases, if water enters into the sim card chip, the sim card might be damaged but thie depends on how the sim card is made and most cheap made sim cards are not waterproof i must admit.
Remember, all sim cards are waterproof and so therefore cannot be damaged by water unless your sim carrier produced a cheap non waterproof sim cards.
I can’t seem to remember the number of times my sim card falls into the water or get soaked up in the process of switching sim cards and the sim card didn’t get damaged as I’m still using it.
Many a time what damages a sim card are sharp objects and this is why you should be very careful using a sharp object on the sim card chip or even cleaning the sim chip.
You might damage your sim card in the process of cleaning your sim card chip especially if you feel your sim card is dirty and not working properly.
Are iphone sim cards waterproof?
Iphone sim cards are waterproof just like any other sim card for other mobile devices, and cannot be damaged by water.
Let me point this out, every sim card are of sane size and there’s nothing like iphone sim card or android sim card. Kindly note that iphone sim card will properly work in android phone as long as the phone is unlocked and not carrier locked.
Why I’m saying this is to let you know that all sim cards are waterproof and you need not to ask are iphone sim cards waterproof.
Even though I said sim card are waterproof, don’t expose your sim card to water else the sim card chip might get rusty and you know the consequency, the sim card chip will get damaged.
Once the sim card chip is damaged, the sim card is entirely damaged and you will need a sim replacement.
How long can a SIM card last in water?
SIM card can last for as long as you kept in inside the water, but bear in mind that this might get the sim chip to rust and get damaged.

Can SIM cards be washed?
SIM cards can be washed with water but overdo it in order not get the sim card chip to get rusty and damaged on the long run.

If your sim card is dirty, I recommend you to use a clean soft cloth and clean off the dirt from the sim card.
You can dampen the cloth with water and rub it on the sim card chip. Remember, you must do it gently in order not to have your sim card chip gets damaged in the process of cleaning your sim card.
