Blocking text messages on iPhone is very fast and convenient, but sometimes we wouldn’t want to open the message before blocking it especially when it comes to iMessage.
iMessage will display if you have opened the received text message or not but only if you have read receipt enabled on your iPhone.
In the article we’ll be looking at how to block text messages on iphone without opening it. First, the question will be is it possible to block text messages on iphone without having to open the text message?
We’ll see about it here in this article.
How to block text messages on iphone without opening it
To block text messages on iphone without opening it, all you need to do is to use a third party and block the sender’s number from sending further messages.
To block block text messages on iphone without opening it there are three methods which I will explain to you but the first method however, requires you to first open the conversation and further block the sender sending messages to you.
Now let me show you the ways which you can block text messages on iphone without opening it.
1. Block text messages on iPhone without a third party app
This requires you to first disable read receipt on your iPhone before opening the message on your iPhone.
Let’s head over to the step by step guide.
Open setting on your iPhone, scroll down to messages and open it. Scroll down a bit and you will see Send Read Receipts, make sure you turned it off on your iPhone.
Once you have turned off send read receipt on your iPhone, go back to the message and open it. Tap on the profile pic or the sender’s name to open the sender info, tap on info and on the next screen is where to block the number on your iPhone.
Right there you will see where it says block this caller just like on the picture below.
Now go ahead and tap on the block this caller button. Immediately you do that, you have stopped the person or sender from sending text messages to your iPhone.
2. When the sender has no number
It can be quite annoying trying to block a nuisant on your iPhone but it is not possible simply because the sender has no number but rather a text name.
A typical example is promotional text messages and spam messages. They only send text messages using the text name as you won’t be able to see the number used in sending the text message.
However, there is a way to be able to get the phone number used in sending these type of text messages to your number. I’m talking about how to block sms on iphone without number.
How to block sms without number in iphone
To block sms on iphone without number, open the message and tap on the sender’s name and you will see the audio call option, kindly tap on the audio call option.
So you go ahead and dial the number by simply tapping on where it says audio with a call icon.
Once you have done that, it will start calling the number so immediately end the call right away.
Now go back to your phone app, go to recent and you will see the number. All you have to do is tap on the i icon beside the number to open the number info and look below you will see where it states block this caller, go ahead and tap on it to block the number on your iPhone.
Once you have done that, the person or the sender will no longer be able to send any text messages to your iPhone.
Where the problem lies for this method
Where the problem lies for this method is that it doesn’t work on ios 15 iPhones. Since Apple released ios 15 or even ios 14, it is quite impossible to get the number used in sending promotional text messages or probably spam text messages.
I still have my old iPhone 6 which only support ios 12 and it has the option to collect or see the number used in sending spam text messages or promotional text messages on an iphone. While on my iPhone 12 Pro Max, the option is not available and I believe that it is because of ios 15.
3. Block text messages on iphone without opening it using a third party app
If you have been receiving constant spam messages or promotional messages on your iPhone and have tried every method but all to no avail, then you definitely need a third party app to help you with that.
The app is talking about is called DontText app which helps to block spam and promotional messages by entering a particular word they often used in sending these types of messages to your iPhone.
To get started, download and install DontText app on your iPhone.
Launch the app and do the initial setup or skip to move to the main deal. Now you will get to a page where it says Block/Allow and at the upper right hand corner of your screen you will see an add button.
Tap on the add button and right there you will add a word or a keyword that you often see in those types of promotional messages or spam messages.
When you have done that tap on add button and that’s it.
If you care to look at the picture above, I blocked 6X BONUS and MoMo Agent as I received a tons of messages that has the word or keywords stating 6X BONUS and MoMo Agents.
Since I blocked the two keywords using the DontText app, I haven’t received these promotional text messages on my iPhone.
Other settings for DontText App
To get the best feature or function of the DontText app, you simply have to enable it on your MESSAGE FILTERING.
To do that, open the settings app, scroll down and open messages. Scroll down until you see MESSAGE FILTERING which says Unknown & Spam just like on the picture below.
Open Unknown & Spam and right where it says SMS FILTERING, select DontText.
Now open the messages app and right there you will see options which includes;
TRANSACTIONS: This comprises text messages from your bank, other financial institutions, payment agencies like PayPal, payoneer, etc.
PROMOTIONS: This includes all promotional text messages you receive from your network provider and other marketing agencies.
JUNK: This is where all junk notifications or messages will be stored in your iPhone.
Once you have this app or any other app installed on your iPhone, you shouldn’t bother yourself asking how to block text messages on iphone without opening it.
You can choose to block a keyword often sent by these people or probably ignore it as DontText app will filter spam messages, promotional messages and transactional messages on your iPhone.
Don’t fancy using a third party app?
If you don’t fancy using a third party app to filter spam and annoying text messages on your iPhone, you simply have to use your phone default settings.
What does it involve?
This only requires you to open the settings app and scroll all the way down to messages and open it.
Thn you will see where it says Notifications, go ahead and open it. Scroll down to Customise Notifications and tap to open it as well.
By default you will see that notifications is allowed for unknown senders, so you go ahead and turn it off on your iPhone.
Once you have turned off notifications for Unknown Senders on your iPhone, you won’t receive notifications or alert about messages from an unknown sender on your phone.
For you to enable this feature i recommend you to install DontText app or any other similar app and this will allow notifications from your bank or other financial agencies.
To block text messages from unknown numbers, kindly disable notifications on unknown sender’s on your iPhone and you won’t receive notifications for these types of messages.
More especially if they are spam messages.
Better still, try and install spam messages blocker on your iPhone and you are good to go. No more spam and annoying promotional messages on your iPhone. And this brings about the end of the question being asked on how to block text messages on iphone without opening it.
