Though I must confess it is quite difficult to know if someone’s phone is in airplane mode, there’s a way I usually find out, though it doesn’t work all the time, and that is what I’m going to show you.

To find out if someone’s phone is on airplane mode, make a cellular call, send an sms text message, imessage or whatsapp message and see if they will all go through.
However, if cellular calls and text messages never went through but imessage and whatsapp messages gets delivered, then it simply means that the recipient phone is on airplane mode.
Once a mobile phone is in airplane mode, the cellular network will be disconnected, and this will affect both calls and SMS text messages. However, the internet can still work on the phone thanks to a Wi-Fi connection.
But if the recipient is using cellular data, that means both calls, text messages, and internet will not be available on the phone.
In order to tell if someone’s phone is in airplane mode, you need to make calls, send SMS text messages, and use any of the instant messaging apps and services like iMessage and WhatsApp to send a message to the recipient.
Let me explain this statement a bit more using the likes of iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc., to call the person.
When a phone is in airplane mode, it doesn’t disable or prevent Wi-Fi on the phone; you can use Wi-Fi while your mobile phone is in airplane mode.

Another method is by calling the person’s whatsapp number, telegram, Facebook messenger, or any other social messaging application.
This is after you must have tried contacting the person through cellular network and it didn’t go through.

Below picture shows you a typical example of when a mobile phone is on airplane mode.
When you look at the top of your screen where it shows the cellular network, you will see a plane icon, just like in the picture above.
But if the person’s phone is not within your reach, you can tell if someone’s phone is on airplane mode by calling or sending messages through the person’s social apps and checking whether they go through.

To call someone on airplane mode, you will have to use a social messaging app like the whatsapp, telegram, Google duo, etc to call the person using the Wi-Fi network.
For those using iPhones, FaceTime comes in handy if both parties are using iPhones or iPads.
As long as there’s an active Wi-Fi connection on the device, any of the instant messaging services will be good for making a call while in airplane mode.
Just like I said earlier, airplane mode does not disable Wi-Fi, as you can use the Wi-Fi network while your phone is on the airplane mode.
So, to call someone in airplane mode, you only have to use any of the social apps, though I prefer WhatsApp, as most people are using it, to call the person.
However, this will go through only if the person is using a Wi-Fi network while their phone is in airplane mode.
If the person uses mobile network data, I’m sorry, there’s no way to reach someone on airplane mode.

Will I get a missed call if my phone is on Airplane mode?
You won’t get a missed call if your phone is on airplane mode for the cellular network.
However, you will get a missed call if the call is from any of the instant messaging apps and services like WhatsApp, Facebook messenger, Telegram, etc., and you have an active Wi-Fi while your phone is on airplane mode.
If you’re talking about getting a missed call from a cellular call, I’m sorry that will never happen cause on the caller’s side it will look as if you have your phone turned off.
If a phone is on airplane mode and someone’s calls the number in the phone, what the caller will hear is, sorry the number is switched off or not reachable though this depends on the carrier network.
Putting your phone on airplane mode will prevent any cellular network services apart from Wi-Fi, and it will look like you have turned off your mobile phone.
So no cellular network will work, and you cannot receive or make calls and messages while your phone is on airplane mode.
The only missed calls you will get are from social apps, but only if you have active Wi-Fi while your phone is on airplane mode.
What does the caller hear when your phone is on Airplane mode?
When the phone is on airplane mode, the caller will hear sorry the number you’re calling is not reachable or currently switched off.
It is left for the caller to leave a voicemail or probably shut off the call and call back later. On the caller’s side, it will probably look as if your phone is switched off, and this is why some people make use of airplane mode to completely avoid disturbance.

How to see missed calls when phone is on airplane mode
There’s no way you will see missed calls when your phone is in airplane mode because there will be no incoming calls from the cellular network.
The only missed calls you will see is the ones from social app like whatsapp, but the case is very different from cellular network and this is applicable both android and Iphones.
I repeat this again, you cannot see missed calls if your phone is on airplane mode cause there will be no incoming calls from any cellular network, you will only see missed calls for whatsapp and other social messaging apps.
How to tell if someone’s phone is on airplane mode is quite difficult, except if you use WhatsApp or any other social app and call the person, and only if the person’s Wi-Fi is active. If the Wi-Fi is not active, then it will simply look as if the person’s phone is turned off.
This is why you will hear sorry the number you’re calling is currently switched off or not available, which is same thing you will hear when you called a number or phone that is switched off.
What does airplane mode do when someone calls you?
Airplane mode will prevent the call from going through, as it will automatically block the call because there is no active cellular network connection on the phone.
However, if the person uses the likes of FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype, etc. to call someone, the call will go through, but only if the recipient has an active internet connection through Wi-Fi.
Talking about airplane mode, please bear in mind that Wi-Fi works perfectly fine even when the phone is on airplane mode.
Only the cellular network will be cut off from the phone, which prevents calls, SMS text messages, and cellular or mobile data from working on a given phone.
