There are certain situations when we don’t want to be disturbed with calls and text messages, we look for a solution.
Since few years back, we have a good solution for it and which includes the airplane mode and do not disturb mode. But on this article we’ll be looking at airplane mode and what will happen when you enable it on your cell phone.
This brings about the question being asked by phone user’s which is applicable on android and on iPhone.
Can someone call you on airplane mode?
Someone cannot call you on airplane mode except for Wi-Fi call whicg will go through but only if you enabled Wi-Fi on your phone.
On airplane mode you cannot receive cellular calls and Wi-Fi calls by default. On the contrary, you can enable Wi-Fi afterwards and receive Wi-Fi calls.
The question will be,
What Wi-Fi calls I’m talking about?
This includes network Wi-Fi calling feature, and instant messaging apps like facetime, whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, Google voice, etc.
Previously when you enable airplane mode on your smartphone, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will never work including cellular network and data. But right now you can turn on and use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth even when your phone is on airplane mode.
By default airplane mode will automatically disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth plus other radio services, but afterwards you can enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your phone.
However, you can’t enable cellular network and cellular data while your phone is on airplane mode. You can only turn off airplane mode to use cellular network service and cellular data on your phone.
As you can’t receive cellular calls on your phone when your phone is on airplane mode, let’s see the solution or the best alternative.
Solution to receiving calls on airplane mode
The solution to receiving calls on airplane mode includes the followings;
- Through facetime
- Through Google voice
- Through whatsapp
- Through Skype
- Through Facebook messenger
- Through telegram
Now let me explain them one after the other but remember you must have an active Wi-Fi on your phone.
1. Through facetime
Right now facetime works on both iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android phones. Previously you can’t make a facetime call to android phone user but that was in the past. With the latest ios 15, you can easily call an android phone user through the facetime.
Now let me show you how it works.
On iPhone and iPad
If you are calling someone using iPhone, iPad, Mac or even the Apple watch all you need to do is to get the person facetime contact details and call the person.
Kindly open the facetime app on your device, select the contact you want to call and dial the number.
On Android
First you have to create a facetime link and send it to the Android user. Once the person tap on the link, the person will have to enter it’s name in order to join your facetime conversation.
That’s it. You can enjoy your facetime call with the person and mind you this doesn’t necessarily work only on android but also on windows as well.
2. Through Google voice
Google voice is another way to call someone when on airplane mode and i do recommend it cause Google voice is simply the best as it works just like cellular calls and text messages.
That is to say that you can use your Google voice assigned phone number to call or send text message to any number on your phone even if the person is not using google voice.
All you need to do is to enroll with Google voice, get an assigned phone number and use the number to call any phone number on your phone contact list. But remember, it requires internet connection like Wi-Fi or cellular data.
To get started, simply download and install Google voice on your iPhone and Android phone.
Open the and get started with your account creation. Please make sure to use a working Gmail account and if you don’t have any, kindly create one by going to Gmail.com.
Opening an account with Google voice wouldn’t take you more than five minutes and you should be done with the account creation.
Once you have verified your phone number, you will be assigned a (Google voice) phone number for call and text messages.
To make a call while on airplane mode, all you have to do is to open the google voice app on your phone and enter the person’s phone number. Go ahead and dialed the number and definitely it will go through as long as you have a working Wi-Fi on your cell phone.
The fun part about Google voice is that you can call any number without restriction, the recipient must not have a google voice account or number, the recipient will never find out that you are using google voice to call him or her.
Remember, you can also receive calls and text messages on the assigned Google voice phone number.
Talking about solution to receiving calls on airplane mode, Google voice is the best as it works on both android and iPhone, and any phone number.
3. Through whatsapp
WhatsApp is another solution to receive incoming calls when on airplane mode. Whatsapp is very popular though not everyone has a whatsapp account.
While your phone is on airplane mode, you can request your contacts to contact you through whatsapp as long as you have a Wi-Fi on your phone.
Other means of receiving calls and text messages when on airplane mode includes Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, iMessage, RCS chat, etc.
Do airplane mode calls go to voicemail?
Yes, airplane mode calls do go to voicemail but only if there’s an active voicemail on the phone. However, if there is no active voicemail on the phone the call will cutoff immediately.
When on airplane mode, the phone is deemed to be offline as calls and sms text messages will be prohibited. Depending on the network carrier what the caller will hear when calling a phone that is on airplane mode will be;
The number you are calling is switched off.
Or the number you are calling is not reachable or unavailable.
But if the you have a voicemail on your phone definitely the call will be
redirected straight to voicemail .
Airplane mode or blocked
When a phone is on airplane mode, calls and text messages will not and it will look as if the phone is switched off. Now when you are blocked, calls and text messages will not go through as well but it will look as if the recipient is busy.
The difference between airplane mode and when blocked is that when you call someone on airplane mode it will look as if the phone is switched off. When you call someone who blocked your number, it will continue to say number busy.
If you happen to find yourself in a situation whereby you have tried multiple times to call someone and it kept on saying number busy, this literally means the recipient has blocked your number on it cellphone.
How to reach someone on airplane mode
To reach someone on airplane mode, simply enable Wi-Fi on your phone and use any of iMessage, facetime, Google voice, rcs chat, Google duo, whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, viber, etc in reaching someone while on FaceTime.
However, for cellular calls and sms text messages that will never be possible on airplane mode. You all have to disable airplane mode on your phone in order to send sms text messages or make and receive calls while on airplane mode.
Does airplane mode matter?
Airplane does matter especially when during flight as it disables radio services, wireless transmission, like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.
Aside from when you’re on a flight, airplane mode helps to prevent any sort of disturbance from calls and text messages, and as well help to make the phone charge faster.
This is one of the reasons why I prefer to use airplane mode, when I don’t want to be disturbed even though we have do not disturb mode.
Lastly, can someone call you on airplane mode? On airplane mode you cannot receive cellular calls and Wi-Fi calls by default. On the contrary, you can enable Wi-Fi afterwards and receive Wi-Fi calls.
