Airplane mode, one of the phone feature that I love especially when I don’t want to be completely disturb with calls and text messages from friends, family and colleagues.
Irrespective or the fact that do not disturb mode is now available on both android and ios, I still make use of airplane mode as it is very essential to me.
Also when I want to charge my phone a lot faster than usual, I do enable the airplane mode.
You may think this is nothing but a MYTH, but it does work.
Talking about the airplane mode which is available on android and Apple devices, one of the question one would like to know and understand is the question of;
What happens when someone calls you on airplane mode?
When someone calls you on airplane mode, the call will never go through and it will look as if you switched off your phone.
Depending on your network carrier and their call settings, what you will hear will be sorry the number you’re calling is currently switched off. In the real sense your phone is not switched off but rather it is on airplane mode which makes the phone to be offline.
Once airplane mode is enabled on a device be it on a cell phone or computer, it automatically turns off radio services which includes cellular network service, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.
Previously you cannot Wi-Fi and Bluetooth while your phone is on airplane mode but the case is different with recent smartphones released.
Before going further into the post, let me give you a quick overview of what airplane is all about and what it does on a smartphone.
What is airplane mode?
Airplane mode is a feature which blocks the data transmitter and receiver signals on a phone or laptop for a limited time, preventing any data from being sent or received on a device. In other words, when airplane mode is enabled on a smartphone or the computer, the user won’t be able to make or receive phone calls, text messages, etc.
By default, airplane mode will automatically turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular network service and data, infrared if available, etc. But right now you can enable and use a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared even the phone or laptop is on airplane mode.
For cellular network service, you can’t enable or use it when your phone is on airplane mode. This is the only phone feature that is not available when the flight mode is enabled on a device.
Going back to the question being asked on what happens when someone calls you on airplane mode, bear in mind that the call will never go through and to the caller it will look as if your phone is switched off.
Receiving a call on airplane mode
For the fact that airplane mode restrict cellular network service which prohibit calls and text messages doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t receive calls and text messages when your phone is on airplane mode.
The truth is that you can receive calls and text messages even on airplane mode but that will be through a Wi-Fi. This will require you to receive calls using any of the instant messaging services like the iMessage, Facetime, whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, viber, Google voice, Google duo, etc.
Thanks to instant messaging services you don’t need to worry about cellular network service being turned off on airplane mode as long as you have an active Wi-Fi around you.
So if you are so worried about receiving calls and text messages, all you have to do is tell your friends and family to contact you through iMessage, facetime, whatsapp, Skype and others.
Remember, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will work even when the phone is airplane mode. All you need to do is to manually enable them on your phone and you are good to go.
How to enable airplane mode
To enable airplane mode on iPhone;
- Pull down the control center.
- On the control center you will see an icon that look like an aeroplane.
- Tap on the airplane icon to enable airplane mode on your iPhone.
Once you enabled the airplane mode on your iPhone, immediately your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular network will be disabled on your phone.
But afterwards, you can go ahead and enable them on your phone except for cellular network or cellular data which will not be available or working until you turn off airplane mode on your iPhone.
How to enable airplane mode on android;
- To enable airplane mode on android pull down the control center or the panel.
- Right there you will see the airplane mode icon, go ahead and tap on the flight icon.
- Immediately it will enable airplane mode on your android phone and which will automatically turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular network data by default.
Once you have enabled airplane mode on your android phone, your phone will be offline by default and cellular network service or cellular data will never be available until you turn off the flight mode on your phone.
What happens when you call someone on airplane mode?
When you call someone on airplane mode, the call will never go through in term of cellular call. It will request for you to first turn off airplane mode before making the call.
However, if you happen to have an active Wi-Fi on your phone even when on airplane mode to make a call using any of the instant messaging apps like whatsapp, facetime, Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, etc, the call will go through.
As long as you want to use the phone app to make w call when your phone is on airplane mode, the call will never work as it will cut off immediately or request you to first turn off airplane mode before making the call.
Can people call you on airplane mode?
In terms of Wi-Fi call, people can call you on airplane mode. But if talking about cellular calls, it will never go through cause your phone will be deemed to be offline or switched off.
Now I want you to do this, get two phones and put your phone on airplane mode. Now try to call you number and see if it will go through.
Definitely it won’t if you are trying to make a cellular call but for the likes of Google voice, Facetime, Whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, the call will go but only if the user has an active Wi-Fi on it’s cell phone.
Why would someone put their phone on airplane mode?
People usually put their phone on airplane mode in order to avoid being disturbed with calls and sms text messages.
Below are some of the reasons why people put their phone on airplane mode;
- To avoid being disturbed with calls and text messages.
- To avoid being tracked by someone.
- To charge their phone faster.
- To prevent their phone from battery draining and make their phone last longer.
Does airplane mode prevent incoming call?
The answer is yes. Airplane mode will definitely prevent or stop incoming calls especially cellular incoming calls. However, if you manually enabled Wi-Fi on your phone and whicg the caller called you using any of whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, or the facetime the call will go.
Let me repeat this again.
Airplane mode usually affects cellular network service as it prevents cellular calls, text messages and cellular data from functioning when enabled. By default it will turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth but you can still go ahead and enable them even when your phone is on airplane mode.
What happens when you put your phone on airplane mode during a call?
When you put your phone on airplane mode during a call, the call will immediately cut off. But I wouldn’t advise you to try such cause it is very wrong to do such unless you are tired of the call and looking for a way to cut off the call.
The above explanation is applied to both cellular calls and Wi-Fi calls.
Should airplane mode be on or off on iPhone?
By default Airplane mode should be off on iPhone as it prevent cellular network service on iPhone. But come to think of it, if you don’t use your iPhone for cellular calls and text messages, or probably don’t have a sim card in your iPhone then you should simply put your iPhone on airplane mode but make sure to enable Wi-Fi afterwards.
Why should I put my phone on airplane mode at night?
You can put your phone on airplane mode at night as it will help to save the battery or stop battery consumption and also stop radiation from the phone.
For me, I don’t recommend putting your phone on airplane mode but rather disable Wi-Fi and cellular data on your phone at night or when sleeping. Why I’m saying this is because you may receive a distress call at night from any of your friends or family.
If you enable airplane mode at night, they won’t be able to reach you.
I’m saying this based on my experience.
Do calls go straight to voicemail in airplane mode?
Calls usually go straight to voicemail if there’s an active voicemail on the phone. If there is no active voicemail on the phone, the call will cutoff immediately.
Lastly, what happens when someone calls you on airplane mode? When someone calls you on airplane mode, the call will never go through and it will look as if you switched off your phone.
