Airplane mode and wifi on at same time? Here’s why

Ever wondered the reason why airplane mode and wifi on at same time when in the real sense Wi-Fi shouldn’t be on or enabled when airplane mode is active on a cell phone.

There’s no doubt that airplane mode disables Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the cellular network/cellular data on a phone but when you shouldn’t be very surprised when you see Wi-Fi active whilst on airplane mode and that which I will explain in this article.

airplane mode and wifi on at same time

Airplane mode and wifi on at same time

The reason for airplane mode and wifi on at same time is because Wi-Fi connection can work even when airplane mode is enabled on a device.

By default, airplane mode automatically disable Wi-Fi immediately you enabled the flight mode on your device. However, you can still turn on Wi-Fi afterwards even when your device is on airplane mode.

Previously this is not possible. That is being able to turn on Wi-Fi on your phone when it is on airplane mode but that has changed in recent times.

With smartphones released few years back you can enable airplane mode on your phone and still use Wi-Fi without encountering any issues.

So if you are using a smartphone like Android phone or iPhone, iPad or Android tablet, laptop or smartwatch, you can enable Wi-Fi even when your device is on airplane mode.

What it literally means

When airplane mode and wifi on at same time, it literally means that you can still use the internet through Wi-Fi to browse, download and stream videos online.

Now if you want to go completely offline on your device especially on your mobile phone, I recommend not turning on Wi-Fi as it means that people can still reach you.

The means which people can still reach you even when on airplane mode as long as you have an active Wi-Fi connection is through iMessage, facetime, whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, Google voice, etc.

As instant messaging apps and services uses the internet, you can be reached through any of these means. In order to go completely offline you shouldn’t enable Wi-Fi whe on airplane mode.

For those that doesn’t want to be tracked especially by those they are sharing location with, airplane mode is one of the options recommended though I don’t fancy it. Mind you while on airplane mode You shouldn’t turn on Wi-Fi cause immediately you do so it will automatically update your current location.

Once you have an active internet connection on your phone or tablet through Wi-Fi or cellular data, it will automatically update location services and will in turn share your location with your friends and family members that you are sharing location with on your iPhone or android phone and tablet.

Understanding the airplane mode

Airplane mode is a feature which blocks the data transmitter and receiver signals on a phone or laptop for a limited time, preventing any data from being sent or received on a device.

In other words, when airplane mode is enabled on a smartphone or the computer, the user won’t be able to make or receive phone calls, text messages, etc.

By default, airplane mode disables Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular network service and data, infrared (if available), and other features. However, even if your phone or laptop is in airplane mode, you can enable and utilize Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and infrared.

When your phone is in airplane mode, you can’t enable or use cellular network service. When a device is in flight mode, this is the only phone feature that is unavailable.

Can you use airplane mode and Wi-Fi at the same time?

Yes you can use airplane mode and Wi-Fi at the same time on your device as Wi-Fi connection works perfectly fine on airplane mode.

Like I said earlier, airplane mode will automatically stop or disable Wi-Fi along with Bluetooth and cellular network on your mobile phone, but you can afterwards enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth even when on airplane mode.

For cellular network service and cellular data thar is not possible as you can’t cellular network while your phone is on airplane mode.

For cellular network service or cellular data to be active on a cell phone, airplane mode must be disabled. What I’m trying to say is that you can’t use cellular data or cellular network service when the phone is on airplane mode.

Because of this, you can’t receive cellular calls or make cellular calls on your phone and as well receive or send sms text messages.

What happens if you have airplane mode and Wi-Fi on?

If you have airplane mode and Wi-Fi on, you can be tracked on your device and instant messages and calls will go through on your device.

Do you think it is weird to have Wi-Fi enabled while on airplane mode, there’s nothing wrong with that even when on flight. On flight, you will be advised to to put your phone on airplane mode especially during takeoff and landing.

This is for precaution as I’m yet to see a plane crash that occurred because someone didn’t enable airplane mode during takeoff or landing.

Going back to the question once again on What happens if you have airplane mode and Wi-Fi on, if you don’t want to be tracked in a certain location or environment, do not enable Wi-Fi when on airplane mode.

If you don’t want to be disturbed with instant calls and text messages while on airplane mode, do not turn on Wi-Fi while your device is on airplane mode.

When should you turn airplane mode on?

You should turn on airplane mode during flight, on a meeting, sometimes at night or when you don’t want to be disturbed with calls and text messages.

On the contrary I don’t really recommend putting your phone on airplane mode during the night cause you may receive a desperate call at night.

I’ve been in this type of situation when I received a desperate call from my cousin in a middle of the night. She was lucky my phone wasn’t switched off or in offline mode as I mostly enable airplane mode from 12am until 5am when I’m awake.

That very day thought me a lesson and since then I don’t enable airplane mode on on my phone in case of emergency.

But when you are in a meeting you can enable airplane mode on your iPhone as do not disturb mode doesn’t seem to work perfectly fine for me. If someone calls for the first time, the call will not go through but if the person calls back withing three minutes then the call will go through.
