Location sharing on both android and iPhone is one of the best way to track someone and which it works perfectly fine from my experience.
You can easily track someone location once they started sharing their location with you. In this article we’ll be looking at the question of the day and which is when someone shares their location how do you see it.
So I will explain it based on location sharing on iPhone and also location sharing on Android.
So let’s continue.
When someone shares their location on iPhone, you will see it through Find My App, iMessage, and contact app. If someone shares their location on android, you will see it through Google map.
On iPhone, when someone shares their location with you on your iPhone, you will be notified about the location sharing as long as you have an active internet connection on your iPhone.
After you must have been notified about the location sharing on your iPhone, you can start tracking the person right on your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple watch as long as these devices are all connected to your Apple ID.

Now let me show you how to find out that someone is sharing location with you.
This is a typical notification you will receive on your iPhone once someone start sharing location with you. The picture above is a notification which indicates that immediately someone start sharing it’s location with you on it’s iPhone, you will receive a notification about the location sharing just like on the picture above.
Aside from receiving notification, you will also be notified on iMessage though it usually happen if you have had a conversation with the person.
This is how the message will be on your message app immediately someone start sharing location with you, it is then left for you to share location with the person or probably simply ignore it.
Another way to find out if someone is sharing location with you is through find my app, once you open the app you will see the notification right there on your screen.
After the person must have started sharing location with you, it is left for you to start tracking the person on your iPhone using Find My App.
Tracking someone on iPhone
For you to track someone on iPhone using the find my app or through iMessage, the person must be sharing location with you. If not you can’t track the person on your iPhone using any of these apps.
GETTING STARTED:
OPEN FIND MY APP: On your iPhone, open find my app and you will see the person’s iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple watch. Tap on the person’s phone or Apple ID and it will automatically update the person’s location on your Apple device.
OPEN MESSAGE APP: iMessage is another way to track someone’s location but only if the person is sharing location with you. All you have to do is to open the message app and locate the conversation you had with the person or locate the person’s contact on your message app.
Tap on the person’s profile to open to view the person’s info or contact details and right right there it will display the person’s current location.
OPEN CONTACT APP: By opening the contact app is another way to track someone on your iPhone, and this requires you to open the contact app, locate the person’s contact and open it. Tap on the profile of the contact to view the info and the person’s location will be shown to you along with other info.
On android, you will receive a notification or email about the location sharing on your android phone or tablet once someone start sharing with you on it’s android.
To see the person’s location on your android phone or tablet, you have to open Google map, tap on your profile to bring out options and you will see location sharing among the listed options.
Tap on location sharing and you will see all Google contacts sharing location with you on your android phone or tablet.
Now to see the person’s current location, tap on the person’s name or Gmail address and it will start loading the person’s location.
This shouldn’t take more than a minute unless there is a poor network connection or the person has no internet connection on it’s android phone.
When it comes to location sharing on Android and iPhone, I prefer the Google location tracking compared to Apple location tracking simply because Google map is way better than Apple map. Google map will display all street name and avenues but the case is quite different on apple map.
In terms of accuracy, both iPhone location sharing and android location are pretty much correct.
To share location on iPhone message app, kindly open the app and locate the recipient contact. Open it and open the recipient contact info and right there you will see the option to share location with the person.
Now let me explain in details how to share location on iPhone Messages.
GETTING STARTED
Open the message app on your iPhone and locate the conversation you had with the person or locate the contact on your message app. Now you have to open the person’s contact profile by simply tapping on the person’s profile icon or Apple ID.
On the next screen, look below and you will see where it states Share My Location just like on the picture below.
Tap on Share my Location and it will display three options for you;
- Share Indefinitely
- Share Until End Of Day
- Share for One Hour
Share Indefinitely: This means you will share location with the person for an unlimited number of hours until you decide to stop sharing location with the person.
Share Until End Of Day: This will share location with the person until midnight which is usually 12am the next day.
Share for One Hour: This will share location with the person for just one hour. For example, you start sharing location with a person around 11am in the morning, once it gets to 12pm in the afternoon location sharing will automatically stop.
Note: For you to see someone’s location on your iPhone, remember that you must enable location services and location sharing on your iPhone.
To do so, open the settings app, scroll down to privacy and open it.
You will Location Services, go ahead and open it and make sure to enable or turn on location services on the option given to you.
After you must have tur on Location Services on your iPhone, move to the next step by enabling share My Location.
Still on same place, open Share My Location and on the next screen enable Share My Location and that’s it.
Right now you can see someone’s location on your iPhone and the person will also see your location but only if you are sharing location with the person as well.
When someone shares their location with you on its phone, you can see the person’s location or track the person on your phone or tablet. This is both applicable to android and iPhone.
If someone shares location with you but you didn’t share back, the person won’t be able to see your location until you start sharing location with the person
How to check iPhone location history
GPS, Bluetooth, cell towers, and Wi-Fi hotspots are all used by location services to track your whereabouts. Viewing the history of apps with tracking permission allows you to see where your device has been.
To check iPhone location history:
- Open the settings app on your iPhone
- Tap on Privacy and select Location Service
- Scroll down to System Services
- Tap on Significant Locations and select History
How do I know if someone can see my location on iPhone?
Once you start sharing location with someone on your iPhone, kindly note that the person will start seeing your location. However, on iPhone you won’t be able to know if someone view your location as you won’t be notified or see any traces of someone tracking you.
Can someone tell your location from a text?
The answer is no. Someone cannot tell your location from a text but rather through location apps like Find My App, Google map, or the iMessage location.
Talking about Can someone tell your location from a text, this is very much possible on iMessage but only if you are sharing location with the person. The person won’t be able to see your location through text, but rather by viewing your profile info on it’s iMessage and which will in turn display your location.
This occurs if the person’s location services and location sharing is not active, or probably the person’s phone is switched off or offline.
Location sharing and location services requires the phone to be active along with an active internet connection. If the phone is switched off or offline there is no way you will be able to see the person’s location until the phone is active with an internet connection.
Again, if the person sharing location with you turns off or disable location services and location sharing on it’s phone, there is no way you will be able to see the person’s location.
Many a time if someone sharing location doesn’t want the other person to see and know it’s current location, the person will go ahead to disable both location services and location sharing.
