Below is the way to facetime to an email address;
- Open the facetime App: Get started by opening the facetime app and on the homescreen you will where it says New Facetime.
- Enter the Recipient Email Address: Tap on New facetime and next is for you to enter the email address. Go ahead and enter the recipient email address in the space provided for it.
- Make the Facetime Call: Once you entered the recipient email address and which is activated with facetime, you will see the facetime audio call icon and video call icon show up. Then you can call the recipient on any of the video call or the facetime audio call option.
In a situation whereby you entered the recipient email address and the facetime audio call icon and video call icon didn’t show up, it is likely the recipient email address is not activated with facetime.
Recently it will show Invite with Messages which signifies that the email address you entered id not activated with facetime.
Incase it didn’t show the invite with messages, and facetime audio call and video call icon are still not showing, then you need to confirm if truly the email address is working with facetime.
To confirm it, I recommend you to go to iMessage or your message app and send a message to that very email address.
All you need to do is to enter the email address in the option provided for the recipient contact number or email address. Now try to send a message and see if the color will be blue.
Go ahead and send the message and check if the message will show delivered. If the color is not blue and the message is not showing delivered, then you should know that the recipient email address is not activated with facetime and iMessage.

Can you facetime without a phone number?
The answer is yes. You can facetime without a phone number but rather with an active email address.
By default, facetime will use the email address you provided when creating your apple account, but you can choose to add another email address to your apple account or Apple ID and have two emails which you can use for facetime and iMessage.
How to facetime with email
To facetime with an email address, you have to select your email address as your facetime caller id.
Once you set your email address as your caller ID, then you can facetime with email.
Below is how to facetime with email;
- Open the Settings app, scroll down to Facetime and open it.
- Scroll down to where it says Caller ID and select your email address instead of phone number.
- Once you have selected your email address as your facetime caller id, then you can facetime with email address instead of phone number.
Aside from the caller id, you can set your entire facetime calls to email address and this means that both the Caller ID and You Can Be Reached By Facetime At option will be set to email address and not phone number.
How do I FaceTime with Gmail?
To facetime with Gmail, you have to add your Gmail address to your apple ID.
Once you added your Gmail address to your apple ID or Apple account, you will be shown an option that says if you want to use the email address for facetime and iMessage, simply tap on the OK button and you’re good to go.

For me, I have multiple gmail accounts and I’m using two for facetime calls. So you shouldn’t worry thinking that gmail will not work for facetime or iMessage, that is not true.
Simply add your Gmail account or gmail address to your apple ID or Apple account, and allow it for facetime and iMessage and you’re good to go.
Then you need to set your facetime caller id to the Gmail address and that’s it.
Why won’t FaceTime work with an email address?
Facetime will not work with an email address if it is not verified and activated with facetime.
If you’re trying to facetime to an email address and it is not working, it is likely that the email address is not verified or activated with facetime, and because if this, facetime won’t work with such email address.
If you’re trying to use email address for your facetime caller id, then you need to set it to your email address as long as it is shown in the facetime settings page.
Just open the Settings App on your iPhone, scroll down to Facetime and open it.
Scroll down to where it says Caller ID, and you will see the available caller ID’S, which includes your email address and phone number.
Then you have to select the email address as your caller ID instead of the phone number. Once you have done that, you can now facetime with your email address.
If you want to revert back to facetiming with phone number, then you have to go back and select your phone number instead of email address.
